Question

Can Jamf erase profile-enrolled BYOD iPhones?

Anyone have experience with BYOD iPhones and iPads enrolled in Jamf via Profile-based Device Enrollment method? Can you issue a wipe command to factory reset them? This Apple support page indicates yes, you can, but I’m hearing otherwise from some people positing that feature’s not available on Managed devices, only Supervised devices...

The question is what OS is now on the device. If you’ve done Profile based on a recent xOS, your mileage may vary.

I can’t say I’ve tested this workflow, but from what I deduce from the documentation, you can erase. There’s also the factor of whether or not your Management Service allows it. So, Check your jamf console to see if you can on a test device.

What does “Management Service” mean?

Management Service is short for Device Management Service, formerly known as an MDM vendor/service. In this case, it’s likely Jamf

@czarmark In our case (Profile Driven enrollment, with Enable for institutionally owned devices and Enable for personally owned devices checked) a user would be presented with a choice upon enrolling. If they choose personal device, then no, the admin cannot wipe the entire device, but can install and remove institutional data. If they chose Institutionally owned, then you CAN wipe the device remotely.

I re-tested this today to verify behavior in our environment.
