Trying to install Chrome for Mac using the app installer.  When it installs, chrome will no allow me to update manually.  If I manually install chrome, then there isn’t an issue.

I do not have a configuration profiles loaded for chrome.

Chrome can be tricky. I actually started using app auto patch to patch these things. I like it much better.

I believe this excepted behavior with the JAC, if you set the update method to install automatically; configured this way, I have found that updates do not install right away. and in browser updates are disabled by design, for met employer the JAC installs the updates fast enough. all that said i agree, if oyu want more control app auto patch, and installomator is the way.

The only things I need to control are forcing SafeSearch, and the homepage.  Everything else is up to the user.  We allow our users to manually update Chrome and do not plan on forcing the updates.  But this is the error I am getting.  What is blocking it?

Background:

  1. We have never EVER managed our MacOS devices before as we are primarily a Windows District
  2. We still have not fully implemented it as I am currently working on a SOP and Written Policies and procedures for Macs and iPads, writing documentation for how users can backup their documents, and find out what apps users need(not want).
  3. This is all new to us so I am still not yet knowledgeable in MacOS management and deployment.

In short I am currently not looking to “autopatch or push any updates remotley”  I’m just trying to install Chrome and get it to work.

Update: 10-21.  I have decided just to make a Chrome package and add a Chrome profile that allows the users to manually update.

Unchecking “Install supporting configuration profiles” will fix this issue.

We’re in EDU as well (you said district so I assume EDU?). You’re very trusting to rely on end-users to update on their own. If you want to go down the management/autoupdate road and have access to Google Workspace you can configure the browser to update on its own, but still allow manual updates. Jamf School/Pro can also configure Chrome in the same way if you don’t.

We are a primarily Windows environment.  We have an entire different department dedicated to Google and instructional software. I do not have access to the Google Admin Console or Workspace.  They told us not to make updates mandatory.  Our security mainly runs through anti-malware, ransomware, and a complex AI based firewall.  So yeah… Chrome updates are not enforced and that's the way its going to be until I'm told by my bosses.  My goal is to match our existing Windows environment as close as possible.
