Content Filtering and Troubleshooting

We recently implemented Content Filtering and saw that the “Clear All” button for safari is now disabled.

In providing support to our users, we often tell them to clear their cookies and cache when they are having issues loading a website. Now that content filtering is enabled, this is no longer an option.

How have you overcome this? Any recommendations?

What application did you enable Content Filtering for?

I enabled it for all devices using a configuration profile.

@ThomasTech This is the general tab, what you are Configuring is under the Content Filter tab.

I mean, it’s pretty much in your face when you create a content filter payload…

Yes, I understand that it’s in my face.

My question is… Has anyone else done this and found a work around when users are having issues loading webpages?

There’s not really a workaround.  You need to figure out ALL aspects of what you're filtering.  Did you follow Apple’s default of “how” to input these sites?  Like there shouldn't be any “https://” in the front and it’ll auto filter down if you put something like google.com in (do not use asterisks or anything for any lower webpages).  If you need subdomains, then you’ll have to put those in like subdomain.google.com

Other than that, it’s up to you to figure out all of the URLs that your website is hitting and whitelist those too.

We found our solution… Safari doesn’t allow deleting cookies and cache with content filtering enabled, BUT Google Chrome does. If an end-user tries to use Google Chrome to visit a blocked website, it is still blocked… BUT they can clear cookies and cache if they are having issues with a permitted website. Thanks for your responses.

That’s great!  Third party browsers aren’t an option here for devices for a purpose (that have a content filter), so we have to ebb/flow for Safari.
