We are a school and deploy laptops to students starting in the 7th grade.  Administration would like to set it so that the computers lock between 10pm EST and 6am where the students cannot log into their device.  We have tried a few things but at best we can get the computer to lock but students just log back in.  Does anyone have a similar setup or suggestions on how to properly setup a curfew on an Apple laptop? For what its worth we are working with all Apple Silicon laptops.

Thank you!

I don’t have an answer, but I feel the need to ask a question. Why is the administration trying to take on the job of parenting? To me this seems like a bit of over reach by the school.

I also question the times they want to apply the lockdown due to personal experience with my own children. How are they writing papers for assignments or doing homework that takes 2 hours after they get home from a sporting event because there was no other time to do them. Or after family events/outings and the computer is needed to do the homework at a later hour that what admin feels is acceptable. I’m guessing you have the proper filtering and ‘bad stuff’ blocking in place for home use, so what does it matter if the device is used after what the administration believes are ‘acceptable hours’.

I get that its a school provided device, but the decision for allowing the timeframe of its use while off campus should be the parent’s. We’ve had parents come to us to ask for things like this and we’ve politely refused but instead given them tips and hints to manage it within their own home.

I’ll step off my soapbox now.

This is not really a MDM problem, it's a parental controls problem and that is where apple has the framework to manage login time.

Depending on your IDP, you can try to make conditional access policies that are time based to prevent access to certain things. You can make smart groups and policies that are time based, but that is about it.

Depending on what content filtering or proxy setups you have in place, you could cut off certain network access during those hours.
