Difference between Download and Install vs. Download, Install, Restart

Hello,

 

For software updates and the type of install action, does “Download and Install” reboot the computer automatically or will it allow the user to restart on their own to complete the installation?

If it does reboot automatically, how is it different from the option to “Download, Install, Restart”?

  • “Download and Install” allows macOS to handle the reboot on its own schedule. The system will install the update during its normal maintenance window, usually overnight, and user deferrals control how long the reboot can be postponed. If the user keeps deferring or the device is unavailable at the scheduled time, the reboot will eventually be forced based on your deferral settings.
  • “Download, Install, Restart” is different. This command forces the Mac to reboot immediately after the pre‑install stage completes. It does not wait for a maintenance window and it does not consider what the user is doing at the time. Once the update is ready to apply, the device restarts as soon as macOS allows it (aside of all the reasons that cause DDM and MDM updates to fail to install).
