Heads up to my fellow Jamf community.

We've been seeing iPadOS 15.8.4 iPads when reprovisioned can't be enrolled to Jamf School.  This may affect Jamf Pro too.  The exact error is "Failed to retrieve configuration".  I reached out to Jamf support and they said they have been getting reports of this from others and that this has been observed across different MDM providers.  Jamf reached out to Apple regarding this issue and this is exactly what they told me:

Apple did get back to us just a bit ago, and they have identified the issue (they did not elaborate on what the issue was). The release is not ready yet though and at this time they couldn't give me an ETA on when that would release.

For now I created an internal Jamf Product Issue so we can track customers and I have attached this case to that ticket (PI136109).

Hopefully an update that fixes this issue will come out soon.  Jamf did say that they could reproduce my issue but had mixed results as one test iPad had the issue but another one did not.

On another somewhat related note we have also seen iOS 12.5.7 devices not being able to be reprovisioned either.  Error on that is somewhat different.  It says "The configuration is not available.".  I'm not pursuing this as iOS 12.5.7 devices are not currently supported by Jamf School.  We were using these devices as communication devices for our special needs students.

Thanks for the information. Luckily we have very few iPads with an iOS below 16.x and most of those are being retired. I will have less than 10 that are being used for ELL and kiosks, but the likelihood of them needing reprovisioned is minimal. But just in case I'm making a note of this.

Has anyone who contacted Apple heard any more information from them? We maintain about 40 or so older devices that are below iOS 16.x, and, thankfully, only 2 have been affected as they were wiped for reassignment. It doesn't seem to affect currently enrolled devices.

I had Jamf contact Apple as this deals more directly with MDM than a personal product and we don't have Enterprise support with Apple.  Jamf said that not all devices were affected and that Apple has identified the issue so there is hope that this might be resolved.  Most likely we will have to wait for an iPadOS update to fix it though as this just effects v15.8.4 devices.

Hello.  We are having this same issue.  We are able to get the devices into JAMF by enrolling via URL, but the internet won't be filtered offsite.  Has anyone found a way to enroll the v15.8.4 devices with a configuration profile into JAMF Pro?

I've been using Apple Configurator 2 for these older iOS devices. Once they are enrolled that way, they all are supervised and seem to have all the assigned profiles working. FYI, we are using Jamf School.

Jamf Support said they have mixed results regarding this.  They can reproduce the issue but not consistently.  So beware.  Some may not be able to be reprovisioned.  So far we've had 4 I can't redeploy.  Jamf Support said it's something Apple has to fix on their end and will likely need an iPadOS firmware update.

The process can be a pain in the neck as if I don't do the steps in the exact right order, it will give me an error message that the device needs to be enrolled using DEP.

Has there been any updates with this?

My solution was to

  • remove the DEP profile.
  • Use AC2 to manually supervise and add to MDM
  • then I added the DEP profile back for a future possible DEP

This worked for us as well. We are using Meraki MDM, not JAMF, so the issue is most definitely on Apple’s side.

Hi, I’ve been stuck on this for a few weeks now, I’m also a Meraki user but have been unable to get through the “Failed to retrieve configuration” error.

I’ve reset the problematic iPad using Apple Configurator.

Removed and re-added the device to the MDM via Apple School Manager.

Created a new DEP profile in Meraki and assigned this new profile to the device.

Reset the device and I still receive the error, am I missing a step or doing something wrong?

Any help would be appreciated.

Feel free to reach out on my email: ja@balcarras.gloucs.sch.uk

Thanks.

You’ll want to completely unassign/remove any currently assigned DEP/ADE profiles/settings to the device(s). Creating a new profile/setting won’t solve the problem.
So: 1) remove assigned ADE settings from the iPad(s) in Meraki, 2) wipe the iPads, 3) manually prepare with AC2 (NOT automated enrollment).
After preparation completes, the iPad will be supervised and you enrolled in Meraki. Then -if you want- you can reassign ADE profile/settings to the iPad just in case this gets fixed by Apple (I wouldn’t hold my breath).

Had anyone received any other answers to this issue?  I ran into it today with an iPad that is in 15.8.4 and was reset.  Thankfully I can retire the iPad, but I still have other devices that only support 15.8.4 that I will have to make sure do not get reset unless there is a way around it.

Not been able to get around the problem :(

I released the device from ASM, couldn’t re-add through AC2 (Provisional Enrollment failed 33007 error message).

Then ended up manually supervising via AC2. The device is supervised and in Jamf.

Good enough for me until I replace them next year.

AC2 Prepare Device

We use Mosyle but have had quite a few of these.  Here is what we found:

Part numbers that work:

PNV22LL/A

MNVF2LL/A

Part numbers that do not work:

MGKM2LL/A

PH182LL/A

For us this essentially came down to anything without a Black Bezel does not work.  We have three different types:

Gold with white bezel - None of these work (I tried about 25).

Silver with white bezel - None of these work (I tried about 10, we don’t have a lot of these).

Silver with black bezel - All of these worked without any issue (over 40).

We are basically going to treat this as the End of Life for these devices.

AC2 Prepare Device

I have been getting around this by unenrolling the device in Apple School Manager (ASM) then pushing a Wifi profile to the devices.  Supervising it like in your screenshot but making sure not to add it to an MDM.  After it is supervised then I push out an enrollment profile for Jamf School and then everything works.  After I re-enroll it to Jamf School in ASM to ensure others can’t steal it and find much use for it.

I do see they released iPadOS v15.8.5 today.  I’d be interested if that makes any difference.  I don’t have any devices to check at the moment but I do plan to check and update the thread if any difference is made with the latest firmware.

Thanks @Jeff Jordan .  Those part numbers are very helpful.  Jamf did say in their experience some work but some do not.

I’ve just tried our iPads on 15.8.5 and it still won’t bring down the config. Having to do them in AC2 as suggested above, but that does mean the profile can be removed from the device by a user easily unless I’m missing something?

@ADB That is correct, the user can remove the profile for 30 days.
