I hear ya.  It does work with Apple Config though.  Here’s how with Jamf School (should be able to adapt to any MDM):

Steps

  1. In Apple School Manager, unenroll the device from Automated Enrollment but keep it assigned to the organization.

  2. Erase or restore the iPad.

  3. Add Wifi Profile with Apple Configurator.

  4. Supervise the device without enrolling it in any MDM.

  5. Add Jamf School enrollment profile with Apple Configurator.

  6. Complete Setup Assistant.

  7. Reassign the device in Apple School Manager back to Jamf School as the MDM. (optional)

Yup, I gotchu.  If you follow my steps above you can still supervise and enroll it into an MDM (Jamf Pro/Jamf School).  Remember when preparing not to enroll in any MDM; otherwise, you will get those errors.

So what do if the device is still listed in ASM, but it is released from the organization?  That is the whole point of me doing this is to try to get the device assigned back to our ASM account. Also, are there simplified instructions for this process?  (My head is spinning in circles).  I am just first wanting to get the device, unreleased from ASM and back to our organization, then I want to fix the not enrolling in Jamf issue.

If all you want to do is get it back on ASM then yes you can’t do that.  But you CAN enroll and manage it using the steps I mentioned.  Not a full fix but at least makes the devices usable.

What version of Configurator is working for this?  I’m trying to get this 15.8.5 iPad into ABM, but it never shows up.  I run the prepare like I usually do (Add to ABM, Activate unchecked), it goes to step 3 “Activating iPadOS on the device”, it eventually disappears, and the iPad never goes into ABM.

Edit: Nevermind, Apple confirmed that this device is on another organization’s ABM.  I’m working with the department that was in possession to determine the originating organization for a release request.

I just wanted to say thank you for finding a way to get this to work!  We still have quite a few running 12.5.7 and  I was really getting worried that I had a bunch of iPads we couldn’t use.

4.Supervise the device without enrolling it in any MDM.

5.Add Jamf School enrollment profile with Apple Configurator.

Is there a reason for not using the MDM enrolment option from AC2, and pushing the profile onto the device instead?

Because some of the iPads aren’t pulling the automated enrollment profiles when being set up. And i am trying to force it with AC2

I checked with iPadOS 15.8.6 (the latest currently for v15) on an iPad Air 2 and this still hasn’t been fixed.
From what I’ve heard some specific iPads may work but from my experience the majority do not work.

We still use iPad Air 2s for special needs students that only need 1 or 2 specific apps.

Same issue exists with v12.5.8 from the iPads I tested with.  You can supervise and enroll these by the instructions I gave previously.  It’s a pain and I was hoping this update would have fixed it.

Sorry for the delay in replying.  Here’s the steps I use.  With additional comments in parenthesis.

Steps

  1. In Apple School/Business Manager, unenroll the device from Automated Enrollment but keep it assigned to the organization.

  2. Erase or restore the iPad. (should be at the start of Setup Assistant at this step)

  3. Add Wifi Profile with Apple Configurator. (need it to connect with MDM later)

  4. Supervise the device without enrolling it in any MDM. (Prepare but don’t add to Apple School/Business Manager, do not add to MDM)

  5. Add Jamf School enrollment profile with Apple Configurator.  (This could also be whatever MDM you are using)

  6. Complete Setup Assistant. (At the end of this it should be enrolled and supervised in the MDM)

  7. Reassign the device in Apple School Manager back to Jamf School as the MDM. (optional, but recommended)

If you have any issues following this let me know and I could probably put together a video or more in depth instructions.

A video would be very helpful.  What I have found is if I get one step wrong, there is no way to get that device to go successfully get a auto profile on it.  The obvious solution would be to upgrade the devices, however since we are a primary windows based district and students have a 1 to 1 Chromebook ratio, this would likely be turned down by finance or the BOE.  So as you can see, we are in a real pickle.

Here’s a short video demonstrating how I do this (based on the instructions I gave above):

This works with v12.x and v15.x iOS/iPadOS.  Since it’s unlikely Apple will fix this I am labelling this as the best answer.

Steps

(optional)

I just came across this issue. I didn’t know where to download my MDM profile in Jamf Pro, so I just signed in to the iPad and manually enrolled it by opening Safari and going to my jamf server/enroll.

What you did can work.

In Jamf Pro it’s slightly different than my example but similar.

Where to download the Jamf Pro enrollment profile (.mobileconfig)

In Jamf Pro:

  1. Go to Devices
  2. Click Enrollment Profiles
  3. Either:
    • Click an existing enrollment profile or
    • Click New to create one
  4. Open the enrollment profile
  5. Click Download
    • This downloads the Enrollment Profile (.mobileconfig)
  6. Click Trust Profile
    • This downloads the Trust Profile (.mobileconfig)
Both files are required if you’re enrolling iPads manually using Apple Configurator.
