yep, just copied over the Recon.exe from my mac to Windows, ran the .exe (filled in information) and now see it in my Inventory.

does it do check-ins and inventory updates on a regular basis like macs ?

You can't really do anything to a Windows computer. The only purpose for enrolling a Windows computer into JSS is for a centralized inventory solution.

@tcandela You need to have a scheduled task that will run the recon on whatever frequency you want. Look up Task Scheduler in Windows. Let us know if that works for you. I'll be doing something similar soon.

@bpavlov yes I've used task scheduler before, it's not new to me.

So I would just need to schedule the command 'jamf recon' to execute based on a schedule I make up?

computer groups are meant for managed computers. windows computers are unmanaged. if you want to see your windows computers make an advanced computer search with the appropriate criteria and save it.

We're going to try the Group Policy solution but how would you purge nonexistent Windows machines from your inventory? With OS X we can create a Smart Computer Group which contains machines that have not checked in but that's not going to work for Windows.

In your case your the criteria you're looking for is "Last Check-in" and some other criteria to focus specifically on the Windows machines like maybe Operating System.

Once you've got the search created and saved, click on "View". Then scroll to the bottom and use the action button and choose the appropriate action you want to take. You may want to test this before hand on a small search group with 1 computer just to make sure the action does what you expect it to do.

EDIT: You can also just click on the "View" button once you've got the search and click on the individual computers you want to eliminate/delete from the JSS one by one if you don't want to use the action button. Once on the computer's page, click on the Delete button in the bottom of the screen. Be careful.

@bpavlov Sorry if I misunderstood what you said, I know how to find and view the Windows machines but how would I go about removing Windows computers from my JSS that are no longer active/in existence?

@martinoc Windows machines can still "check-in" but can't be included in Smart Groups as @bpavlov mentioned. In the Advanced saved search, include a Last Check in criteria line and use something that makes sense for the number of days out you want to use for it, as well as making sure its only looking for Windows machines.
Once its all set up and you can confirm its pulling the systems you want to purge from Casper, run the saved search and scroll to the bottom. Use the Action button and choose Delete Computers as the action to take. This is a non revertable action, so be sure you have it all set up right.

Edit: And I realize I just repeated exactly what @bpavlov just said in his post above yours. So that is the right approach to take here.
