What I want to achieve:



  • Enroll AppleTV 4ks (with only HDMI port) in Jamf School and add them to ASM via Configurator 2.


My Steps so far:



  • Followed the Apple documentation: https://support.apple.com/en-au/guide/apple-configurator-2/cada1ba9dab1/mac

  • Renamed my Phone Hotspot to "Apple Store" (no Password) and the Apple TV and my Mac with Configurator are both connected to the network (both devices connected with some data traffic)

  • AppleTV does not show under paired devices

  • This AppleTV is new and has never been configured (Thats why I used the free "Apple Store" Wifi Trick)

  • Other devices, including other Apple TVs with USB Port show under Paired devices in the same Wifi


Additional Question: Is it even possible to enroll an AppleTV without a USB Port to ASM + Jamf School.
I rechieved a Tipp, that it is only possible when the AppleTV has never been configured.
The Wifi Pairing with the older A.TVs only worked, because I went to the settings of the "Test-AppleTVs" and entered a code. But a reset (and re-enrollment) with only Wifi pairing isn't possible, because in order to complete this, the device has to connect to the "Fake Apple Store" Wifi after the reset which it does not do. 
So the test device shows in Apple Configurator under paired devices, but does not connect automatically to the Wifi. The AppleTV automatically connects to the Wifi, but does not show under Paired Devices ?!

If you got any idea, help would be much appreciated.

Someone please correct me if Iu'm, wrong, but when I was last looking into this, I believe only apple could enroll wifi only Apple TVs into a ASM instance, if it was bought directly from apple. It is not possible to do via coinfigrator or with any of the after market tools. At least that's how it was when I last looked into it. For this reason, my employer always purchases Apple TVs directly from Apple or from a reseller that is integrated within our ASM. All that said I'd love to proven wrong. For this reason we also always buy the model with ethernet, least if anything goes wrong, enrollment is workable with 3rd party tools.

@mschlosser Nope you can enroll Apple TVs purchased elsewhere into your own ASM instance. I had to when an educational service center that administers some grant money purchased some Apple TVs for us a couple years ago. Works just fine, albeit I always get the ethernet equipped models, but the process is more or less the same.


@a_Jamf_Rookie You stated you were using a phone hotspot. It's assumed that if it's an iPhone or even an Android phone that a hotspot won't recreate a "network" for you i.e. the devices connected to it won't see each other. That being said I'm fairly certain this process uses bluetooth for the pairing. First steps would be to ditch the phone hotspot and use the wifi infra in your school/building. That will at least allow(if configured) devices on connected to that Apple Store ssid to see each other.


 

Thanks for the supplies, but I contacted Apple Enterprise Support and enrolling newer Models of Apple TVs isnt possible anymore. IT is/was possible with older Models as described in the guide above. Apple should just mention this in their documentation.
