Hi

What is the difference between the two other than one is Jamf managed (?) and the other is getting stuff from the app store?

Do both update?

We have only 90 macs (won’t have much more..), and 1000 vpp licenses.

Are both always on the same latest version, or App Store is more up to date?

In use case is there a per-say difference?

Thanks

Hello GabeCz,

The Jamf App Catalog is a built-in feature of Jamf Pro, while the App Store is Apple's default application marketplace.

Both are used to install applications, but the Jamf Catalog updates with the latest versions faster than the App Store.

Jamf Apps, contains some Apps not available in the AppStore, like the Adobe Creative Cloud Apps.

Yes Both update. Jamf in my experience are pretty good at keeping the version up to date.

I use both methods. Some Jamf Apps and some AppStore via VPP. Not seeing any issues.

If there is an App available via both methods, then it is up to you which you choose to use.
The only limitation I have found, is JamfApps deploy to one group only, where AppStore Apps have scope and you can add multiple groups in the scope.

The Self Service+ app is still missing from the Jamf Catalog, tho.

We use both due to the availability of various apps, but for apps that are available in both channels, we tend to go with the Jamf AppInstallers over the AppStore and VPP. In my experience, the update process is more reliable with the Jamf AppInstallers. I also like the dashboard for those app deployments better. There are still a few frustrating PIs open for things like notifications and the deployable config profiles, but overall I find the Jamf AppInstallers to be a step in the right direction.

Regarding Self Service+, yes it’s not in the AppInstallers, but if you are ready to deploy that org-wide, you can just toggle it on as the default in Jamf Pro, which will automatically deploy and update it across your fleet.
