I'm a sys admin of a K12 public school that is 98% mac, we have a couple of labs. A few years ago during the summer I discovered that installing OS updates and upgrades wouldn't complete with a logged in user, then later, a logged in user had to enter credentials to perform the installation. 

In terms of a "touchless" installation for iMacs, are there any solutions? Also, please provide detailed instructions if you have them :-)

TBH though, there are no guarantees these days of being able to automate any kind of OS updates on Macs anymore.
