Network Service Order. Does it matter?

Hey everyone! Quick question. We are deploying MacBook Air’s in a school setting. The devices will be connected to school WIFI with a configuration profile. Do you think it is necessary to manually set WiFi at the top of the network service order?

Not unless it became important to you for some reason, no. Since modern Apple laptops no longer have a built in ethernet port, it will use the Wireless Connection as the primary (en0). We prefer this behavior in our environment for our own reasons but every place is different.

Would depend on your network environment. We like ethernet hardwire to take precendence when available. Can cause weirdness in our environment if it fights with WiFi.

The students would only be connecting to WiFi with their MacBooks, no ethernet. Service order wouldn’t matter then?

Doesn’t sound like it. You can probably just hop over that setting and move on. Let it default to your school WiFi.

If your environment has more than one SSID, it might be beneficial. It can help to make sure the Mac prefers the managed school network over other known networks that users may have joined, such as a guest network.
