We have the policies to install the following Office 2024 components in order during our prestage deployment:

2024 Volume Serializer
Microsoft Excel 2024
Microsoft PowerPoint 2024
Microsoft Word 2024

For the past couple of years, this has worked exactly as intended. The volume serializer is installed to activate the license, then the individual apps are installed one by one. After deployment these have also opened and been activated. However, over the last week or so, the activation is no longer applying. I’ve tried everything I can to try and deactivate the license/reactivate it from self service etc, but the only fix appears to be completely removing all office components, and reinstalling them - only then does the volume serializer work.

I thought this might be as a result of the latest Office apps, so I reverted to using older versions of the pkg files but the problem remains. I even tried using the whole Office suite pkg but the same thing is happening. Anyone else seen this before?

I just found a similar situation in my fleet. Recent deployments the 2024 VL Serializer was not activating office suite package builds.  I found that I had to fully remove office using office-reset tool, reboot, redeploy 2024 VL Serializer along with an older office build, 16.99 in my case. When trying with newer builds such as 16.107, the VL would not work.

did anyone ever find a viable solution for this? We are still having the issue and having to install ancient versions of office apps in order to activate before updating them.

Hi, just to clarify, are you getting that Microsoft Office 365 log in when you open any MS Office app?

Yeah, that’s right. It’s been an issue for some time now - we use the volume serializer like we always have, but you get the sign in screen when you open an Office app with no way to skip it. The only workaround we had was to use a much older version of the office apps where activation still worked, and then update it manually once it was activated. I was trawling the mac admins slack channel yesterday and I found a script that looks like it may fix it (though I doubt this is a permanent solution!).
