Hi all,

We have a situation where we need to remove some iMacs from our Jamf instance, but we need to keep Logic on them. We have purchased Logic through Apple School Manager and it feeds into our Jamf with those purchases, so I’m assuming they will have to be connected to Jamf in some way to get the app.

We need these Macs to be offline and standalone as they are old and no longer supported, so we don’t want to risk having them on the network (we’ve previously been a victim of a ransomware, so network integrity is critical now).

My question is, is there a way to release the Logic licences we have purchased through Apple School Manager as, say, install codes or VPP codes (I’ve checked Jamf Pro and there is no VPP codes under Managed Distribution) so we can install them individually, or do we have to have them on Jamf to get the licences?

Many thanks,

Ben

This is certainly an interesting question. Can I ask a few in return?

• How were those licenses applied to the iMacs in the first place?

• Also, out of curiosity, how “old” are we talking?

• If you just want them offline, why would you want to remove them from Jamf? I totally get that you want them off network, but you could at least use Jamf to notify you if they do get connected and check in. Extra security and all!

You mention the lack of VPP codes which leads me to assume it was assigned via “Device Assignment” but I want to be sure. If this is the case, the license will last forever so long as they remain offline… or if they reconnect to the internet, that the VPP token still be associated with the Jamf MDM.

Not possible. Jamf deploys apps using VPP as Apple requires, and that requires the device to be able to talk to APNS and Jamf. If you unmanage the device, it will remove the VPP apps. You could log in to the mac with a non-managed Apple Account and buy the app from the Appstore but keep in mind that account owns the app, and it still needs the mac online to perform the purchase and download.

If the mac hardware is end of life, it needs to be recycled and replaced.

@AJPinto AJPonto is certainly correct in that they will need to be online to get the VPP app (if they don’t already have it). I’m just saying you can disconnect them after.

Nope.  No dice.  Institution owns them now 😈
