Hi all, Looking to upgrade several Ventura machines to Sonoma. Plan is for JP to issue commands to download and install Sonoma and users receive a prompt to reboot to finish the upgrade.


Testing hasn't yielded expected results. Leveraging Software Updates in JP with "download and install" + Target version > specific version deploys the upgrade but the machines automatically reboot with no warning or user interaction. Duplicated experience with 14.7.3 then 14.7.4 (after the latter was released last week). Happens with Intel-based and Apple silicon machines.


Noticed some prior discussion on the forums recommend using MDM commands. Not sure if the above scenario meets the criteria. Appreciate the assistance.

Do you want it automated, or do you want user interaction? I find that the DDM updates through Jamf Pro are hit or miss. If you trust your users and bug them enough, then erase-install is an option. You could also look into using S.U.P.E.R to automate the update, I believe, but I havent used it so you'd probably want to read through the Wiki for what your options might be.

Super is great option for this used it last summer to do our OS upgrades works great, now have working with API so doesnt require and account which works well.

Its not that the MDM/DDM commands from Jamf for OS updates are hit or miss, its that the workflow Apple is using is garbage. No MDM has better a better experences here.

@tdenton We use super for installing minor updates and pretty solid. Unfortunately  it looks like the InstallMacOSMajorVersionTarget only takes whole numbers. Upgrading to 14.0 only to get prompted to install 14.7.3 wouldn't be a good user experience. Might leverage super later this year to upgrade to Sequoia (due to time constraints building out Jamf Pro for Sequoia isn't an option ATM).
