With Apple's new Education Licensing program, I need to quickly identify how many computers are under 4 years old. I can create a smart group to find how many are over 4 years old, but I can't seem to think of a way to easily create a group for computers whose purchase date was less than 4 years ago.
Does anyone have this done already? I know I can just subtract the number of the over 4 years, from the total, but I'd prefer a smart group, so I know exactly what computers are covered under the licensing.
Thanks,
Robert

Try by hardware configurations, amount of RAM or x86 versus PPC.
How long have the intel Macs been out now? Has it been 4 years already?

Do you have the PO Date in your JSS? If you do, you can build your Smart
Group based on that information.
I know there is supposed to be a way to tell by looking at the serial number
what year and month the machine was mfg, but I don't remember the formula,
and I don't know how accurate that information is. This is the article, one
of many I'm sure, detailing this:
http://www.tuaw.com/2005/04/14/when-was-your-mac-born/
These two sites have info too:
http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com/Desktop/index.php
http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html
Using that assumption, you might be able to build a smart group using the
serial number, but I haven't tried. Look for anything where the third digit
of the serial number is less than a 5 or 6? Maybe a shell script that looks
up the serial number, checks that third digit, then if less than 5 it tells
the JAMF binary to trigger a policy with a custom trigger that drops a dummy
receipt on the machine. Your Smart Group then looks for the dummy receipt.
Thoughts?

This isn't the Smart Group you're wanting, but it's one way of identifying

Export a list to Excel that includes serial numbers. If you know Excel well
enough to remove the first two characters of the serial number then the
third character is the year of manufacture. The forth and fifth characters
are week of that year.
For example, my serial number is W8738XXXXXX. It was made in September 2007.

Apple began shipping Intel in 2006. We're using Intel processor as a good cutoff.
