10.5.8 to 10.8.5 file share over SMB

Please hold your laughter till the end.... I have 10.5.8 clients and am trying to connect to my Casper share on my 10.8.5 file share and the client gets an immediate "connection failed" message without asking for credentials. I am able to work normally in any OS newer than 10.5.8. Is there an SMB versioning issue between these OS's? I am trying to run a self service policy to upgrade client OS's. I get failures via smb as well as http that look like this:

Executing Policy 10.8.5 Installation...
[STEP 1 of 2]
Mounting Casper to /Volumes/Casper...
Error: Could not mount distribution point "Casper".

Executing Policy 10.8.5 Installation...
[STEP 1 of 1]
Downloading InstallOSX_10.8.5_12F45_custom.pkg...
Failed to download files from http://myjss/Casper/Packages/InstallOSX_10.8.5_12F45_custom.pkg/index.bom.

I am able to access the share from the 10.5 test computer by putting in the URL to a different package and it will download.

This whole process works normally if I use any other OS.... Thoughts?

Pardon my ignorance on the technical details, but we run into issues on our network because of the use of Microsoft DFS. We use one address, say, smb://domain.tld/shared/sharename on 10.7+, and smb://shared.domain.tld/sharename on 10.6 and below. Mac OS X became more compatible with DFS with 10.7. If you are hosting your CasperShare in a Windows-centric environment, you might want to get together with your Windows network admins to chat.

That is some great information and I will spend some time exploring this possibility.

I have spoken with my Windows Server admin and we are running DFS, but my Casper shares are outside of the DFS scope. thanks again, mikeh!

here is an update, I am seeing a jamf error while trying to use Self Service to install an app. I see similar errors when running any app install from a 10.5.8 client:

I see this error and the Self Service policy does not close but the software appears to have been downloaded and seems to be usable ( at least with Google Chrome and Kidspiration 2)

I get a similar result when I run a standard policy:

Checking for policies triggered by "recurring check-in"...
Executing Policy Google Sketchup 8.0 10.5.8 policy test...
Downloading http://jssurl/Casper/Packages/Google%20SketchUp%208.0.dmg...

There was an error.

*** +[NSPropertyListSerialization propertyListWithData:options:format:error:]: unrecognized selector sent to class 0xa00a6f80

Sketchup will launch, but no dock item is placed (part of the policy) and there is no policy log
