9.65 + 10.10.5 = being dragged over broken glass

Are you daring? Are you adventurous? Do you like to base jump off short buildings? Do you walk (not run) over red hot flaming coals? Do you like to crash into a brick wall at 100MPH+ without a seat belt on? Do you use a four digit iPhone security code and frequent bars? Do you put catsup on your ice cream?

Then you are the perfect candidate for OS X 10.10.5 + Casper Admin 9.65.

Licking my wounds...

Don, do I dare ask why are you still back at 9.65 ? So many big bug fix releases since then.

@rcorbin Same question I asked, it's going to be addressed soon. ;)

We're on 9.65 because it took us months of troubleshooting issues with 9.65 with support until we were able to upgrade to it. We won't be upgrading again for a few months, after much testing, at least until JAMF makes the release available that addresses GSX concerns (mid sept).

Guess I'll be testing casper admin before installing 10.10.5 on the workstation I use it most on.

Can I ask what issues you've encountered? I've been using 9.65 on a 10.10.5 machine for a few days now and haven't noticed any issues.

Same as @andrew.nicholas. I'm using 9.65 Casper Admin on my laptop & another testing machine on 10.10.5 and haven't had any issues.

@donmontalvo What issues have you been experiencing with JSS 9.65 and OS X 10.10.5? I'm in a similar situation where I simply cannot upgrade past JSS 9.63 until D-009351 (NAS) has been resolved. However, we haven't deployed OS X 10.10.5 to our users yet and I would like to know what I should be looking out for. Specifically any issues concerning client check-ins or using CasperAdmin.

The issue I posted about is "OS X 10.10.5 + Casper Admin 9.65".

Crashes during replication, which, to us, is a deal breaker. :)

Using 9.65 and 10.10.5 we have been having issues with self service and Casper Remote mainly. (We have not tested far past that because we were testing a new base image rollout and could not use self service to install most of the apps)

Basically self service will fail immediately (unable to mount to the share), or it will sit for ages trying to verify the package and finally it will give a nil or empty path argument error.

The logs are reporting the following after failures.

  • -[NSFileManager fileSystemRepresentationWithPath:]: nil or empty path argument

or

Mounting jdp01 to /Volumes/CasperShare 2...
Error: Could not mount distribution point "jdp01".

When the same policies are working fine on 10.10.4 systems...

I tried unmounting Casper Share 1with " umount /Volumes/casper_share " - but terminal reports it is not mounted, and trying " rm -rf /Volumes/casper_share " does nothing either, it still tried to mount to CasperShare 2.

Update: And now that I have said all that.. it seems to be working fine this morning? I think a lot more testing is required from my end.

@donmontalvo Is it all servers that are failing to replicate? I've been able to replicate to my primary DP with out issue.

@donmontalvo - we had that happening almost 100% of the time (in 9.65) until we:

Changed the server names from DNS to IP on the JSS
Got rid of the special characters in the passwords for the two JSS accounts (casperadmin and casperinstall).

Worth a shot if you haven't already tried it. Since then, it's a lot better - not perfect, but better.
Using 9.72 now and it's running pretty well too.

I upgraded test workstation to 10.10.5 and was able to replicate with casper admin

9.65 windows JSS
Dist points OSX
Servers are in JSS by IP and no funky char in passwords

Sorry for the late response, we rolled back our admin Macs to OS 10.9 and the problems went away.

@donmontalvo That's pretty far back to roll your machines. Why not go back to, say, 10.10.4 instead of all the way to 10.9.5? Or was this just not an option for some reason?

@mm2270 we just did an Internet Recovery and left it there. The OS isn't a real concern, besides we're going to be setting up the replicas to pull from the master via rsync, so we won't have to deal with replication anymore. And yes, JDS is coming too...

@donmontalvo I have been getting the occasional random Casper Admin crash while uploading packages or replicating since version 8 has been released. I'm running 9.73 now on 10.105 and they still occur. I thought it was just par for the course. I haven't seen any significant regression or improvements in this area for a while now. Obviously YMMV and it looks like you're seeing something more serious.
