ICYMI (In Case You Missed It)…

Our guest for this Thursday's Twin Cities Mac Admins meetup is Paul Bowden with Microsoft. He’s been working the past month with Mac admins in Slack to make some fantastic changes to the Office 2016 for Mac installer and Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU) tool. Office v15.17 released this past Thursday and ICYMI here’s some of what he’s done so far:

  • Fixed licensing issues when installing using Casper, munki, Apple Remote Desktop or any other tool that uses the command line installer (released to volume license customers in January).
  • Posted download links to all current and past Office 2016 versions and a list of distribution servers around the world for the fastest downloads.
  • Given us a heads up about the future of the volume license installer and why it might break your current workflow.
  • Provided early testing builds of the installers and hinted at a new early release program for testing Office updates.
  • Provided a heads up about delta updaters, managing the default file save location, managing online storage providers and stopping Keychain Access pop-ups.
  • Provided the ability to manage the “What’s New” windows for Office 2016 applications.
  • Suppressed the MAU Daemon pop-up message after an unattended install.
  • Provided the ability to manage what version of Office 2016 the MAU application will install.
  • Created standalone volume license serializer package that will license any version of Office 2016 (such as one downloaded from Office 365).
  • Added choices to the GUI Office installer that correspond to a choices XML file for managing which applications install.

If you’re managing or testing Office 2016 for Mac, you’ve probably encountered some of the issues Paul has addressed and he’s planning even more improvements based on your feedback. Join us this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. CST to discuss current news in the Mac admins community and speak with Paul about Office for Mac via Google Hangouts.

If you’re joining us in the Twin Cities…

JAMF Software is providing dinner and beverages for the meetup. If you haven’t already, please RSVP by Monday, December 14, to help us plan for ordering food. If you’ve already registered, we look forward to seeing you in just a few days! Also, parking in downtown Minneapolis can be expensive, so Bryson has prepared this map to show nearby parking locations and pricing. You’ll find additional details on the event page.
