Our school district is replacing several hundred iPads this summer with newer models. Many of these iPads have a unique combination of apps whose scope is set to the individual iPads rather than groups. My question is how can I quickly replace my old iPads with new ones without manually assigning these apps to new devices? For example if "iPad 1" has apps A,B,C,D can I automatically assign those same apps to the replacement "iPad1.1"? I was thinking of making a smartgroup for each iPad and joining the new iPad to that smartgroup, but that will still require reassigning the apps to the groups rather than the individual iPads.

You could create a webclip that contains Self Service install url's to deploy a number of apps at once.
For example I deploy an 'Install Office Apps' webclip using this method. When an end user opens that shortcut, their device will be pushed the apps i've specified using their bundle identifiers. This way you are grouping the apps together without needing to change their scope, webclip can either be pushed out or installed via Self Service.
