Netinstalls store in RAM and in virtual memory on the HD. If there is
not enough free space it will lock. My netinstall I think is like 11
gigs, but my main image is about 14 gigs in size. I have a very large
standard image, and it is faster to block copy said large image than to
package deploy a base image and many packages to over 6,000 clients.
Remember that a netinstall pulls down the whole OS so it needs to pull
down the compressed image file and then have enough space to expand at
the same time. I am thinking you want at least probably 20 gigs free.
Once in a netinstall if you quit the casper imaging app it will drop
you to a root shell session. You can run the diskutil command from
there and wipe out and restore a new partition, then relaunch the casper
imaging app by using the open command. That way you don't have to
re-netboot 100 times trying to troubleshoot it.
My very first guess at the problem would be bad HD or bad RAM, possibly
bad NIC but in my experience bad NICs typically fail to netboot all
together.
