Certain software updates cause client issues

We've got a NetSUS that has been delivering software updates quite happily until some point last month. I've worked out that I enable certain updates, the clients report "An SSL error has occurred and a secure connection to the server cannot be made" if I run softwareupdate -l

I've got a small test branch and I can get this behaviour just by selecting and applying certain updates. Without these problem ones it works as expected. I don't want to have to go through all the possible updates to work out which ones are problematic and which aren't but equally I guess I might really want to install one of the problematic ones on the clients

I don't understand how this work enough to know whether this is a problem just with the catalogs or whether there's an issue with what's on the this disk. Or how I go about fixing this. So any help would be gratefully received
