Computer Groups - Desktop and Laptop

Not applicable

Does anyone have an easy way to create a computer group for only desktop and
only laptops?

Currently, I can use smart groups and specify individual models to define
the desktop family (same for laptop), but I will have to manually update the
models when introducing a new ones.

or

I can create a static group and manually assign computers.

Any other methods that someone can think of?

Easier to just use MacBook as the defining statement:

Desktops = model not like MacBook

Laptops = model like MacBook

That's how I have my two smart groups scoped and it works fine for us. I
have every possible model of Mac here (MB, MBP, iMac, Mini, MacPro)

Use the different model filters in a smart group for each.

Like or is MacBook, PowerBook, iBook, etc
Like or is iMac, mini, mac pro, etc

Usually easier to do the like because selecting from there options list pressing the ... button is huge. Just be careful with Mac Pro.

Do an inventor advanced search just showing models, sort by model name to help pull your specific models as jamf lists them you have. May be an easier way but thats how I do it.

I'll take this a step further and say that I "THINK" this is a very common criteria to want to seperate systems by in the JSS and it would be REALLY nice if there was a simplified option in the JSS to just select if a smart group should be seperated by Laptops and Desktops (maybe even Servers) since each model in the JSS could be categorized as such. I don't recall of the list that the JSS has is pre-populated, or if it's built per site as you recon boxes. Either way, would be nice to categorize models and then be able to just use the broader categories for some smart groups. Any takers on adding this as a feature request? =)

On a side note, I do end up just duplicating a smart group to reuse my settings quickly, but then I have to remember to do ALL of my smart groups if I have to add a different model.

You may want to make the laptops group = model like book

for environments that may have the older models.

Otherwise this works well

Model like "book" should get you all your laptops. Likewise, Model not like

But then where would the new Mac Mini Server fall?

It's the Pluto of the mac lineup isn't it? J

You just said it..."server"

And yes, Pluto is a planet in my mind...=)

It didn't occur to me to use the filters in this manner, was stuck
"inside-the-box."

Thanks, this approach works best.

Depends on what your view is.
Hardware based or Software based.
Create the group accordingly to look for your particulars.
