desktop alias/icon arrangement

Is there a way to arrange icons/alias on the desktop outside of applescript? That is the only way that comes to mind. I know a way of doing this in some linux distributions. I would prefer not to use apple script.

I have a kiosk type machine that has 4-5 icons that need to be arranged in the center of the screen.

I'm not completely sure but the icon arrangement are stored in the desktop's .DS_Sore file You might be able to grab that file and pushit ut to computers in a DMG FUT policy. Full Disclosure: I haven't tested this
