Efficient way to scan 1000+ subnet environment for Macs

We have an environment that has over 1000 subnets where Macs may reside. We can use Recon to scan the subnets (or we can use ARD, but why bother when Recon is so much better).

We have a spreadsheet with the different subnets (broken down by DHCP scope). Is there a way for Recon to import the contents of the spreadsheet to set up the different subnets (with an added plus the ability to export scan files for each of the subnets)?

We're scheduling a meeting with the client's network folks so we can get approval to scan the subnets. I don't want to be slapped on the wrist again (been there with other large clients) because of the broadcast storms these tools use for discovery. I'm hoping the network folks can pull reports on the Cisco switches so we can find any of the subnets that have Macs (going by Ethernet Address prefixes).

If this is possible to import these subnets into Recon, it can cut down the amount of time it'll take us to get Casper up and going at large environments. This would be a *huge* gold star for JAMF. :)

Thanks,
Don

Smells like a feature request to me... :)

Hi All,

We also have 1000+ subnet to scan using recon. Is there anyway to import the subnet into recon? Adding 1000+ subnet individually will takes months of time?

I have not used this, but others have with good results I believe, but it only takes a little bit of the pain away. You still have to manually babysit Recon to find the assets.

I think there is a feature request in here somewhere to add support for AD Sites, and that would be a big help, but still, I've found that using Recon to scan large amounts subnets causes it to crash. And when breaking it down in smaller chunks, I frequently forget about it.

What's needed is the capacity within the JSS to schedule 'automatic' discovery and enrollment. Pass it off to the server to handle off hours or in smaller regular chunks.

I should open that request I guess...

I spent SO much times setting up buildings and subnets. The ability to import those subnets would have been great, I wanted this a few years back myself. But now I got it all setup.

I agree Darrin, I still find I too have to babysit Recon even with the info set. It's a very time consuming process. I still don't have every Mac in our district in the console.

We were able to import as Buildings, just requires properly formatted text file, and awareness that if a subnet exists, it will be duplicated if imported text file includes it.

Hi All,

I am looking for a way to import the subnet in standalone recon application to discover and install JSS Clients.

I hope the script provided JAMF is to import the subnet to organize network segments in JSS.
