JSS backups failing (4K files)

Is anyone having problems with JSS backups showing up as 4K? Here's what we're seeing:

$ ls -lh total 12739264 -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 181M May 11 03:07 2010-05-11_03-00-00.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 258M May 17 03:09 2010-05-17_03-00-00.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 330M May 17 17:26 2010-05-17_17-15-28.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 331M May 18 03:11 2010-05-18_03-00-00.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 362M May 19 03:12 2010-05-19_03-00-00.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 422M May 21 03:13 2010-05-21_03-00-00.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 465M May 23 03:14 2010-05-23_03-00-00.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 480M May 24 03:15 2010-05-24_03-00-00.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 511M May 25 03:16 2010-05-25_03-00-00.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 529M May 25 14:17 2010-05-25_14-03-38.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 574M May 27 03:13 2010-05-27_03-00-00.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 20B May 29 03:00 2010-05-29_03-00-00.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 20B May 30 03:00 2010-05-30_03-00-00.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 20B Jun 2 03:00 2010-06-02_03-00-00.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 885M Jun 2 08:00 2010-06-02_07-40-27.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 890M Jun 2 08:55 2010-06-02_08-31-52.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 20B Jun 4 03:00 2010-06-04_03-00-00.sql.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 casperadmin staff 20B Jun 5 03:00 2010-06-05_03-00-00.sql.gz

The database is currently at 17G. We increased the amount of time between log purges, which is increasing backup size. Hoping to get access to a Syslog server soon.

Could the size be causing errors in backup? If so I can script manual backup of log files and set JSS Setup Utility to purge log files after N days. Was hoping to not go there, so we can get logs over to Syslog server.

Thanks,
Don

Doesn't the xxxM part denote the size?

Tbh, I've not run the command you have below on our JSS, but this is from
the nightly e-mails:

The jssutil (/usr/sbin/jssutil) created a backup of your JSS Database. The
backup was saved to:

/private/var/backups/jss/2010-06-04_03-00-00.sql.gz

The backup is 795M

The follow backups are also present on the server:

792M 2010-06-03_03-00-00.sql.gz 789M 2010-06-02_03-00-00.sql.gz 784M 2010-06-01_03-00-00.sql.gz

Hi Ben,

Yes, I used "h" in the "ls" command to make the sizes human readable. The 20B backups show up as 4K in Finder. Backup sizes have gone up since we disabled automatic purging. We're working on getting a Syslog server built to send JSS logs to. Don't want to lose anything until then.

JAMF suggested that since log deletion defaults to 3AM, we should try to offset Distribution Point replication and JSS backups so they all happen at different times. I made some changes, will see what happens over the next few days. I'll shout back with more news.

Thanks,
Don
