I'm trying to double-check all our MacBook Airs before we hand them out to students. Many of the computers say they are not bound in the inventory, but when I run the self-service to bind them it fails. Log tells me they are already bound. Why does it show up as "not bound" in the inventory? These had all been tested for binding when they were first deployed this summer.

What does your JSS report if you run Recon first? Could very well be your JSS is just not updated with the latest information for the machines.
Also, if the machines were bound and then put on a shelf for a while their computer account passwords in AD could very well have expired. The dsquery command may help you identify these machines. This looks like a useful guide:
