OT: Lion, Illustrator, EPS and an SMB share

Hi everyone,

this isn't Casper related, but i guess some of you may have run into this.
We're having an issue here where our users can't modify Illustrator EPS files located on an SMB share.
Only Lion users are affected.

When modifying a file and trying to save/overwrite it, this happens:

We're using CS4, but i've tried CS5 as well and it's the same thing.
AI files work fine, it's just EPS that can't be modified.
Permissions on the share and the files themselves are correct.
Replacing the files with a local copy through Finder also works.

I know Adobe says

don't work on servers

, but that's not quite feasible.
Does anyone have a hint on how to fix this?

When it comes to SMB shares you have limited options to tweak the behavior of connecting. 10.7 doesn't use SMB anymore because of a licensing change—Apple created their own new client for cifs/smb access.

Usually places turn to DAVE/ADmitMac (ADmitMac is the DAVE cifs/smb client with AD binding) or Extreme Z-IP.

DAVE is a client side package. Extreme Z-IP is a server side solution that sites between the client and the cifs/smb server.

Exercise caution with EZIP... IME Once you install it, it's very difficult to get rid of it

One of the problems with SMB...or shortcomings...is it lacks the "reconnect" feature of AFP3. So if there is a connection anomaly, the session ID could break and open documents can't be saved. When users call with -5000 errors, and we find they are opening files over SMB, we have them save to the Desktop and then copy to the server. Sometimes that works...when it doesn't we have the server group confirm user has full rights to the server folder.

@Chris That's Adobe's default response, since they can't possibly support every kind of network environment. If you're lucky enough to have a solid network and a responsive network team (equipt and willing to sniff for issues), users should be able to work off SMB shares without issues. That said, it pays to have a Fluke Linkrunner Pro handy for those times when you need to test things (connectivity). ;) Or if you're working for a Firm that spends money on infrastructure workflow solutions like Xinet FullPress/WebNative, you must work off the server...if there are issues the integrator would fully support you.

Afaik, Adobe have never supported the saving of Creative suite documents to file shares.

As such, I always ask people to copy locally, edit then re-upload.

Thanks for your input everyone!

I just found it a little weird as we have no issues at all with working on SMB shares,
apart from this one.

I'll ask our users to copy stuff to their machine before editing,
don't think i can get DAVE or anything just because of this problem.
