Post MySQL 5.7 upgrade unfamiliar compress_gtid_table thread

After upgrading from MySQL 5.6 to 5.7 this weekend I now have a thread in my connections list:

Command: Daemon
Time: 1444819
State: Suspending
Type: Foreground
Name: thread/sql/compress_gtid_table
Info: Null

I am not seeing any negative impact at this point. I have just never seen this before. Has anyone running 5.7 seen this and is it safe to kill this connection or just let it be?

    I haven't seen this, I did the MySQL 5.6 to 5.7 upgrade about a month ago as well.
