Setting iOS version

Hey List,

I have a question that could be answered with a Casper solution, but mostly wanted to get an idea of how/if people are doing this. We have a number of iOS devices that need to be kept at different versions for QA testing. Is there a way for us to, A) Keep people from upgrading iOS devices once they are loaned and B) Downgrade the device to a specific OS version for testing.

We can't be the only company out there with these needs. Wondering if anyone as found a solution…

As far as I am aware from an iOS developer view u cannot downgrade the iOS once u upgrade

U certainly can't with prerelease versions

I have 5.0 on an iPod and I now can't go back

I would sat the same is true for love iOS versions

And I doubt u can stop someone upgrading

They can simply connect to iTunes and wipe the device and install the new iOS

Does a full backup and the a "restore from backup" restore the OS and user data, or is the backup just of user data?

I think that a full backup and a "Restore as new" in iTunes will NOT change the iOS version on the device. There are workarounds and I believe that Xcode lets you install different iOS versions on devices. I haven't tried downgrading a device though.

I know what I was thinking of.

If you put the phone in DFU recovery mode, you can option click and choose the iphone software version IPSW. They can be retained when upgrading or most are archived somewhere. By doing that, I think you can install whatever version of IOS that you have on your computer (the IPSW package), even if it's rolling it back to an older version. I'm not sure if you can roll back without DFU mode. It would be worth trying as getting into DFU mode can be a little tricky.

Well as an iPhone developer I know that you cannot role back developer iOS versions, it makes that clear on the site

I guess u can roll back released versions ok

You can prevent upgrade of iOS devices via mcx to disallow the store in the com.apple.itunes.plist
