unable to distribute Safari 4.0.4

Not applicable

friends, romans, countrymen: lend me your tech suggestions...

we have not been able, under any circumstances, to successfully
distribute the latest safari via casper. perhaps it's because the new
version of that app utilizes apple's new "flat package" technology.
(right click on the pkg after downloading it from apple and see for
yourself: you can no longer view the package contents...)

we've downloaded both apple pkg's for 10.5 and 10.4, uploaded those
pkg's into casper admin, indexed and set each to be installed with a
dependency for the OS. our policy includes BOTH pkg's so that we've
got one policy regardless of OS, something we do frequently with great
success. this policy is set to kick off at start-up.

however, every time we try to distribute those same pkg's from apple,
we're getting a variety errors of:

+ the app doesn't install although the policy says it has
+ we get the "this path doesn't exist error" we usually get when we've
got bad permissions on our caspershare mount.

and so forth. jamf tech support has, thus far, been stymied as well
but i KNOW i can't be the only one out there with this kind of
experience. talk to me: what have you done to get this app
distributed?

Hi,

I have installed the same for version of Safari for Leopard and Snow Leopard through Casper policy, it worked fine. Directly created policy with the downloaded pkg from Apple Site. It shows failure logs if the OS version is different is different, in my case it showed failure for Tiger machines.

Have not had issues using Casper 7. What version of Casper are you using?

If I remember right, one of the Safari updates required a security update
before it would install successfully. Could this be the case?

Please forgive me for jumping in to this thread. I'm curious. If Casper is running on an OS X Server box, why not simply enable SUS and manage it there? This is where I wish JAMF would step in with some best practice recommendations. :):):)

You could set all your clients to look at your own SUS server on your local network.
Manage it and only put in the Apple updates you want to apply out to your clients.

Then use JSS to run all available updates.

That's the same way I do it also. I did find however that unless your
Server is 10.6 the Software Update service won't get any updates that
are specific to 10.6.

Hi David,

Is there any reason why you're not using SoftwareUpdate in OS X Server to
push your packages for this?
I'm pushing out Safari 4.0.4 with no issues at this stage and even though
I've had to re-jig our policies to account for lack of support for OS X 10.6
Server it still proves to be the best option to distribute updates.
Out of interest what version Server are you currently on?
