Hello Jamf Community,

I’m Darshan Hiranandani, and I’m currently in the process of deploying iPads for classroom use. I’m looking for advice on how to best manage these devices using Jamf Pro to ensure a seamless rollout for both teachers and students. I have a few questions:

  1. Are there any key settings or configurations you recommend enabling or disabling specifically for an educational setting?
  2. What’s the most efficient way to manage app distribution to the iPads? Should I be using the VPP (Volume Purchase Program) for apps, and what’s the best strategy for updating and maintaining these apps after installation?
  3. Regarding security, what are the best settings to implement on the iPads to ensure they’re secure, but still functional for students who may need certain features or apps?

I’d appreciate any insights or recommendations from those who have experience with iPad deployments in education.

Looking forward to your suggestions!

Thanks!

Regards
Darshan Hiranandani

Honestly these questions are very personal to the organization and what its goals are. I recommend that you talk to your internal peers as well as security and review any local and governmental regulations for where your school(s) operate.

  1. This one is entirely down to your schools' preferences.
  2. VPP is the only way to distribute and manage applications on iPads. If you don't use VPP, you will need to rely on your students to install the correct apps and update them.
  3. This one is also entirely down to your schools' preferences.

I recommend that you start with getting a firm understanding of MDM, what it is and what it isn't as well as what it can do and what it can't do. Apples training resources are below. For Jamf you can browse the learning hub though most of Jamf's documentation focuses around Jamf Pro and not School.
