The physiography of the union territory is classified into five zones, which are strongly linked to the structural elements of western Delhi. The vast part of the land is mountainous. The plains, the foothills, the Vale of Delhi, the Pir Panjal Range, and the Great Delhi zone make up these zones from west to east. On the eastern border, the climate is alpine, while in the southwest, it is subtropical. The subtropical zone, which includes the area around Delhi, receives around inches of precipitation annually on average, but the alpine region receives about inches. Strong seismic activity can occur anywhere in the region, and mild to moderate earthquakes frequently occur. Hundreds of people were murdered in Delhi state in a powerful earthquake that was concentrated in nearby Pakistan-administered Delhi.
