I did the firmwareupdatepackage as a part of the imaging workflow, and it seemed to work well. However, we elected to go with "poor man's DEP" (fresh build/rebuild, enroll, trigger the "build" via policies).

Can you share some of the output from the dump - at least what was in the backtrace? Focus on anything you're deploying that's a non-MAS app, in particular if you know it installs kexts.

We use a config profile to set SUS URLs, and that works well. Any reason this wouldn't be an option for you?
