Best Practices for App deployment

I just recently ran into an issue with assigning apps to multiple smart groups of iPads. 5 carts of iPads had the app SpriteBox, those were added about a month ago. We then added another cart for a total of 6 carts and when the assignment was complete all carts received the app again. It appeared to delete and re-add the app.

What is your app assignment look like so when you add additional devices to receive the app all devices don't delete and re-add the app, if the app contained a project that data gets wiped along with the app.

Smart groups are created using our asset tag info, name by school and grade level and then scope that smart group to the app.

We are now afraid to add additional devices for fear that the existing devices will loose projects the kids have been working on in class

Thanks for any insight on what we should do differently.

We have found that when adding additional apps, to just do it via Self Service and let the user install it. Then we know that the other iPad's won't be messed with. I am thinking you could use a Smart Group if you wanted to have the device automatically install it.
