follow-up: Retail DVD, Mac OSX with Casper Imaging

Not applicable

Gang,

Picture attached. Original post is below.

The good folks at Jamf, helped provide the solution for how to image a Mac
using the retail DVD image that boots correctly AND also includes the
first-boot set-up wizard. The solution was to go into the "Custom Install"
portion of Casper Imaging, click on the "Advanced" tab and select the "Show
Setup Assistant After Reboot" button.

Although I didn't find this info in that portion of the Casper Suite 7.1
documentation that covers how to take an Apple install DVD and convert it
into a file for Casper (p.135-142), it was pointed out to me that it DOES
appear on p. 269.

The problem with 10.4 imaging was that I was trying to image newer machines
with older OS's. Wah-wah...

Cheers,
D

Gang,

I've hit an impasse and can't seem to use Casper Imaging with
installing the 10.4.6 retail version of the OSX DVD. My goal: have a
simple way to take deployed Macs and erase/re-image with the stock
config that would come from using the DVD installation. To accomplish
this goal, I:

+ Created a compressed DMG from the DVD made using disk utility
+ Uploaded the DMG to Casper Admin
+ Tagged it as an OSX Installer Disk
+ Did NOT create a custom installer, just left the installer "as-is"
+ Added that one file into a configuration with NOTHING ELSE (scripts,
pkg's, printers, etc.)
+ Netbooted to our master netboot image (from which run all of our
imaging) and called that configuration.

The results vary.

+ Sometimes the installation acts as if the file is not a valid
installer and finishes up within 15 seconds.
+ Sometimes the installation will run but the computer fails on
reboot. Examining the drive shows that a full installation has been
laid down but that there's an odd "etc 1" folder in the root directory
with another directory inside called "xinetd.d-migrated2launchd".
never seen that one before...
+ Once, the installation did complete and the computer DID boot but
loaded a login screen which, of course, left me confused. As we'd not
called for any accounts to be created.

A fresh install from the retail DVD should produce a Mac where booting
up takes you to a welcome screen movie, followed by a first-run
wizard. Why, on earth, is this seeing to be so difficult?!

I know, I know... if I wanted I COULD install the DVD and then make an
image and upload that image to Casper Admin but... you know: this way
is supposed to work, so...
