Good replacement for Open Directory server hosted home folders?

This really isn't a Jamf question, but I was thinking that either NoMAD or Jamf Connect may be part of the solution.

We have a new customer who is currently hosting user home folders on macOS Server running on OS X Yosemite. Since the latest version of the Server app is pretty much a neutered stripped down app that pretty much makes it totally useless, I'm searching for a better solution. I really don't want to deploy Mac servers for customers anyway since Apple has clearly decided that they don't want to make a serious effort with servers. We need to replace this current setup with something that will allow users to login to any Mac on the network, and have access to their own files. Preferably, they need to be logging in using some kind of directory account. We work with a great cloud file sharing service called Egnyte. I have been exploring ways to make Egnyte the solution for files, but I'm not locked into using Egnyte.

Does anyone have some advice on this? It would be very much appreciated 😍
