Grayed out Wifi with !

Hey All,

We have been experiencing an issue while rolling out 100+ staff machines which are MBA 2018. We have rolled out about 20 so far with reports coming back with wireless not being able to reconnect when the user closes the lid and moves to a classroom. Once lid is reopened it searches for wifi then after a while reverts to grayed wifi symbol ! Connected to the network but can't access the internet.

We are using cert based auth for wireless. They are all DEP and bound correctly. All certs are correct usernames and are in correct groups. They are all running 10.14.5. We also have a case open with our wireless providers.

This is becoming a really pain for us as we are having trouble even knowing where to start looking for the issue.

Note: We rolled out 400 of the exact same model using the exact same method Jan this year with no issues. Only differences is the macOS version which range from 10.14.2-4

Any suggestions would be amazing!

Hold the option key and click the Wi-Fi symbol. You will see gray text below the connected network name with signal strength, channel, IP address, etc.

An exclamation mark usually indicates that the network failed to give out an IP address (DHCP failure).

Have you run the Wireless Diagnostics yet?

  1. Option-click the Wi-Fi symbol.
  2. Click “Create Diagnostic Report.”
  3. Click OK and wait about 2-3 minutes.
  4. A Finder window will appear, highlighting a .tar.gz (tarball) file, when the log dump is complete.
  5. Open a case with Apple, and/or unpack the tarball to find “wifi-xx-xx-xxxx...” files. They contain detailed logs about the wifi service.

You’re advised to run the diagnostics report as soon as possible after the issue occurs, because these logs roll over very quickly (in the last 1-2 hours, sometimes).

Hi @bradtchapman Thanks so much for the advice. We managed to capture info from a dropout and are sending it around to our wireless provider and I am in the process of opening a case with Apple.

Ill keep you posted.
