We offer a number of Apps in self service. Currently we use a smart group "[program] is Installed" as an exception to hide installed apps in self service. However this creates two issues:
-a lot of smart groups. Easy enough to make them, but they do add up and the UI doesn't handle this well
-it removes the app from the policy which also means the "auto update" aspect of VPP software in self service breaks.
I can use the global update all App Store Apps...right? So that could solve issue #2.

That is from 2012 so I thought I'd at least check to make sure a better workflow isn't available, particularly since the majority of what we offer in Self Service is VPP content from teh App STore, something relatively new.
