iOS App Store Updates with App Store Restricted

Is there a way to push iOS App Store updates with the App Store restricted? Currently our users are on iOS 8.1 (with automatic app updates turned on) and we are running Casper 9.61. We are able to push out new apps fine. The App Store will appear for a brief moment and then disappear. However, our current workflow to update apps is to remove the restriction, launch the App Store momentarily, and then re-apply the restriction. Is there a better way to do this?

I'd like to know this too.

I tried a 'ReInstall' of the app from Self Service and it Updated from the App Store (not a delete and reinstall, local data was retained). Still need to test whether this was because the app was Managed, or if it was because it was installed from Self Service.. it did not update on a test iPad where I had installed the app from Purchases. This last point may or may not be critical for some as VPP Assigned apps are placed in their Purchased area if the App Store is open.

This is less than ideal, and is what I'm experiencing too. Un-scoping an iPad from the restriction configuration immediately brings back the "App Updates toggle" under the Automatics Downloads section of the iTunes and App Store Settings. I assume it's just an iOS "issue" that when the App Store restriction is turned on, the system dissociates all things to do with the app store. When really what we need it to do is allow things like updating and app pushing to work, but not allow the App Store to be present.

As long as the app was installed by the JSS and is thus Managed (automatic install or Self Service install) the 'Reinstall' method seems to Update the app to the latest version. Less than ideal indeed, as no user is going to understand that, even if I make a special Category just under Featured..

For those that have not seen it, there is an FR for this. https://jamfnation.jamfsoftware.com/featureRequest.html?id=2697
