NetBoot not working with new Lion macbooks

We just received a batch of brand new macbook pro's that shipped with Lion.

We cannot net boot to our existing 10.6.8 net boot image.. If we try over and over we can get it to boot on occasion but rarely.

I created a net boot image using Lion and the 10.7 system image utility with the casper automator task but when added to the net boot server it does not even show up as an option when booting the mac.

we have been spending a lot of time on Netboots and regular images lately
too - so I have a few callouts that I myself have been guilty of when I'm
here a bit too late :)

- did you click the checkbox for "Enable" in Server Admin under netboot?
- did you set it to diskless?
- did you remember to hit 'Save' in Server Admin?

I know they are really silly things - but like I said, they can be easy to
forget when you're repeating the same process over and over

Thou shalt now roll back farther than what "Originally" shipped on a given Mac..

That should read:

"Thou shalt *NOT* roll back farther than what "Originally" shipped on a given Mac"

What version of 10.7 did they ship with? And when you create a NetBoot image for lion, make sure you go into system/library/coreservices/ open directory utility and enable root. It is disabled by default in 10.7 clean installs. You can sudo as an admin, but unless you enable root it won't run Casper correctly. I found that out the hard way.

JAMF KB 236 outlines all the steps necessary for creating your Base, Restore and NetBoot images (including the steps to enable root, etc.):

MacTracker (free) was updated a few days ago and includes the October 2011 MacBook Pro laptops:

We just received a batch that has Mac OS X 10.7.2 (11C74). This is the same build number on our fully updated Lion desktops/laptops. Using the JAMF KB 236 guidelines, our Lion NetBoot/Restore/Base images work fine with these new Oct 2011 MacBook Pro laptops.
