Anyone else using nfs home accounts or nfs automounts for server access that would be able to discuss their experiences?

We tried with X.4 no luck, was able to get it working X.5.2, Apple made changes in X.5.3 and it stopped working.

Since then we have pushed user to UNIX group if they require nfs home accounts or nfs automounts. We focused on portables and the UNIX group handles desktops. My limited involvement and knowledge remembers there was an issue with the "type of automount map" the OS could read and when it did work we were having issue with it dropping the network connection.

There was also issues with application like Entourage really only working when it was reading and writing data to the local drive. We solved this with a symlink and I know MS has worked on this issue as one of their biggest accounts uses network homes.

Hope this helps!!

We already successfully run automount executable mount maps for both our home accounts and servers (I work in a mainly Linux world). In many ways this is great, but it has it's pitfalls. The main problem is getting our Photoshop users to not use files over the network, but make sure they work locally and then copy files back. Especially tricky when every other application we use is happy to work with files live from nfs network servers. Photoshop performance is relatively poor with live network files, not to mention the possibility of saved files being corrupt, which albeit rare it can, and is known to, happen.

I was wondering if anyone else tries to work around this. Maybe people use an in-house check-in/out system; copy files locally and then copy back for the user once done.

Regardless of it being nfs, afp or smb, how do others work with files and Photoshop? Similar issues can arise regardless of the connection protocol. If you get users to work locally, how and when are users expected to get their files back to servers? Do people back up the local storage in some way to protect the local copies? I'm currently running a dirvish from a server to backup the files from our local storage drives, but I'd be interested to hear what other methods are being used.

Hey fella,

We use mobile accounts with no sync, all our file shares are SMB.

I've always advised users against opening Creative Suite files off of the servers, instead I ask them to copy off the server... Make changes & reupload.

If I get pushed on it I send them:
