Policies & best practise

Hello,

I am curious what other people do with their policies in regards to deploying software. At the moment, we plan to make all our software available via the self service tool. However, I am unsure what to do as best practise in regards to creating policies and I will explain;-

I create a policy for Firefox v30 to be available on the self service app.
I create a smart group that checks if Firefox is installed and does not have version '31'
I create another policy that installs Firefox v31 to all computers in the smart group

I could then clone the policy with Firefox v30 and make v31 now available in the self service store. As we plan to retain old versions (also, how many policy version do you retain before you have a spring clean up?)

Does anyone do this and how messy does it become when you have 70-80apps? Am I best just updating the app within the self service store and allow the users to use their initiative to install the latest version themselves?

Thanks.
