Profile priority for iOS devices

We have all of our grade level Middle School ipads set not to allow installing apps or have the App store. I need to add an app to a select group of iPads. What would be the best way to go about that? I hesitate to make a change that would affect the whole class level... If I create a new profile that has installing apps enabled and scope it to those kids, will that take priority over the profile that currently has it turned off?

Hi Anne,

From my testing, no that won't work. Unfortunately you'll need to remove the profile that disables installing apps.
If you were to use Apple Configurator (I don't recommend it) then you can still installs apps in Configurator if it was the one to create and apply the profile that disables installing apps.

Someone else can jump in if they've found a way around this.

Anne,

Do you have all of your devices configured with the same Apple ID and do you just have the apple store disabled? We have that setup and we push out apps quite regularly. As long as the app is downloaded with the same ID that is saved on the device, we can push apps to any number of devices.

If I "allow app installation" then the app store appears wide open... what combination of restrictions are you using? That would be extremely helpful!
Thanks!

In the event anyone else is looking for this, I have found a work-around - I scoped all of our restrictions to a static group and then I can simply remove the iPads one at a time and then add them back in. If anyone else has a less brute-forcey way of doing it, I would love to hear it! 8 )
