"Retain cellular data plan" Explanation

Could one of you help me understand the "Retain cellular data plan" when wiping a device. In the Admin Guide it only says "For devices with iOS 11 or later, you can choose to retain cellular data plans."

I could assume what this feature does, but I would rather have a more detailed explanation.

If we have any data plan settings under "Settings > Cellular settings for data options" will be retained for connectivity of a device under lost mode...

But why does this option appear when you wipe a device? I don't know the reason for this function here.
