Upon adding five iPad 9.7in to our environment, we ran across a quirky issue that I wanted to speak about on JAMF Nation. Internally, we prefer to assign each iPad to an individual team member, so we utilize the 'Full Name,' 'Position,' 'Username,' and 'Asset Tag,' fields within our Mobile Device Inventory list quite frequently.
The five iPads that we purchased are currently assigned to a fleet vehicle, rather than a user. I attempted to name them all 'Route 1, Route 2, Route 3,' etc. with the username being the office in which the fleet vehicles report to.
We found out that if our Mobile Devices share the SAME username as other Mobile Devices in our inventory, any fields we update for one (such as position field) then the changes are made to each of them. The resolution is to use unique usernames for each asset (obviously, now that I've learned).
This post is just food for thought and will potentially assist other JAMF Administrators in the event they run into this issue.
