VNC or ARD into a NetBoot'ed Mac

Not applicable

Hiya all...

Anyone know if this is possible?

Pretty much as it says. Either VNC or ARD into a machine that is NetBooted?
Would love to avoid carrying a key/mouse/mon and make it truly headless.

Thanks in advance!

...This depends if you are using a "NetInstall" or "Netboot" image.

Currently we use a Netboot image, and in the process of building the image I
enable "Remote Management" under your Sharing prefs.

As long as you have a local user on the Netboot image with privileges, and
the service enabled you can control your Netbooted computers no problem.

It's been awhile since I checked, but that last time I did this was not a
feature you could use with "NetInstall".

Pat,

If the image you're netbooted from was set up (in "Remote Management" of the Sharing preference pane) for management (before you burned the image) then you can ARD into it. Same thing with VNC - just set it up in Remote Management - Options.

I imagine this would even work if you don't have a local user. Our
netboot image is AD-integrated and only one group in AD has administrator
privs while netbooted (defined in the AD plugin in the Directory Service
utility). We needed a way to restrict admin-class users without using a
local shared account (which are not allowed here).

If you place the "administrators" group in the allowed to use screen
sharing, directory-based accounts should be able to utilize it as well.

Yeah but my nbi file is set to run as root user with no authentication. Of course I only use mine for imaging.
