We are seeing this issue too in 10.12.5 and in the 10.12.6 beta 1. I've
opened a bug report with Apple and am waiting to hear back. The
workaround presented above is helping in the meantime.
I can confirm we had this issue once we upgraded from 9.96 to 9.97. Our
LDAP users could log in, but not LDAP group members. Adding the
sAMAccountName for User ID got us working again. Brett
