Adobe CS4 Install During Imaging

I decided to take another stab at refining my imaging process and putting
CS4 back in the mix. I have CS4 Design Premium added to the JSS as an Adobe
image. No problem there. However, when imaging a computer, at first reboot
the computer never logs into the Temporary Adobe account that Casper
creates. The computer sits at the login screen forever. If I restart the
computer and login as my admin user on the machine, the install starts.

Has anyone else seen this behavior?

The OS image I am pushing is created with InstaDMG and is a 10.6.3 image. I
have also tried this with an OS X DVD dropped into Casper Admin (select Mac
OS Install Disc).

I have tried placing just the OS image and Adobe CS4 DP into a configuration
with the same results.

Anyone?

Yes. What version of the JSS are you running? =)

I've seen the same.

For 90% of installs, just waiting seems to work... after 10 minutes or so it seems to login..

The other 10% need another account to login..

Just to keep everyone in the loop, I opened a ticket with JAMF support and
they were able to re-produce the problem. So, they are working on it.

So glad to hear this! Yes, I'm seeing the same and have reported it to JAMF

as well. They couldn't reproduce the problem with their database, so I've
provided them a copy of mine.

I've seen this with Casper 7.2 and 7.21. Didn't really use it much before
that to say whether or not it worked then. I've had this fail with the
individual Adobe CS4 application installers. Haven't tried with the full CS4
installer.

As much as I loathe Adobe (google don+montalvo+adobe+deployment if you're curious), the recent beatings Adobe's installer development group should bring some interesting changes on the enterprise deployment side. It'll be interesting to see how these changes will mesh with the Casper Suite. :)

Another update. We have identified two separate work arounds for this
problem:

1) After imaging a machine and having it restart, the machine stalls at the
login prompt with the Temp Adobe User waiting for a password. Simply
restart the machine and when it comes back up, login with the admin user
(management user) that is on the machine. The Adobe install will kick off
immediately and complete with a restart of the machine.

2) Create your OS image by using Composer and not dropping the OS X Install
DVD into Casper Admin. This appears to get around the login problem.

Hope that helps everyone.

I can confirm step 1 works.. as I had to do this yesterday..

The os dmg were using is the 10.6 dev gm with 10.6.3.v1.1 applied, & I've not yet rebuilt any 10.5 machines to see if it is the same, but will be soon.

One thing I wasn't clear on, is that this is only happening with 10.6 and
not 10.5.

Ah ha!

Is this from an os created from a dvd or the gm?

I'm not sure I'm clear on what you mean by GM.

If you create the OS install using a disk image of the retail DVD or a
drop-in-box DVD and use Casper Admin to create the install (drop image into
Casper Admin, check "This is an Apple install image"), then you will have
this issue.

If you load the OS onto your best machine and then snapshot it with
Composer, you will not have this issue.

I don't think it matters what OS DVD you use to create the image, if you use
the first method the Adobe install will fail.

I received word from JAMF that this is my issue as well. I'm using a .dmg of

imaged here, it reboots, runs "After Reboot" scripts and binds to Active
Directory. I can log in with my local admin account that's created as part
of the configuration or I can log in with an AD account. Any of them trigge

the Adobe install process at that point.

Until this is resolved, I'm choosing to go with the extra login step. After
using InstaDMG and then using Casper's ability to utilize a pristine
installer each time, I'm loathe to create an OS package.
