We use 'IP in menu bar' instead (http://www.monkeybreadsoftware.de/Software/IPinmenubar.shtml). It puts the IP address in an easily located place, just have it launch on login.

We use Geektool here , you can run shell script and display the result ontop of the wallpaper

+1 for Geektool.

I used it for a bit, and it did well for the time I used it. I stopped using it though for some reason... but I think it was to do with the way I had it setup/scripted. Never had the chance to go back over it.

Edit: looking back at some of my code, it looks like I knocked something up in Python as well and compiled it with py2app. The original code is missing (dammit) but I guess I would have used imagemagick modules?

I know it's not instant "one glance" but in case it needs saying, you can click the clock at the login screen to get IP and 'computer name' (and OS version/build), just like pre 10.7 you could click the bit above the name/password
